Women’s Health Week Programs on Menopause, Aging and Rural Health

Three virtual programs will highlight aging, menopause and rural healthcare as part of National Women’s Health Week, May 14-20.

On Monday, the National Institute on Aging and Office of Women’s Health will hold a live Q and A on Women’s Health and Aging at 1 pm ET. Topics will include menopause, sarcopenia, cognitive health and how to maintain health as you age. Go to NIA’s YouTube page.

On Tuesday, the 7th Annual Vivian W. Pinn Symposium will be held from 10 am to 5 pm ET. This year’s theme is Menopause and Optimizing Midlife Health of Women.

Topics to be covered include:

  • State of the science on risk factors and mechanisms that lead to reproductive aging.
  • Understand women’s unique morbidity and multimorbidity burden to identify points of intervention.
  • Identify the needs of populations at risk for iatrogenic menopause (patients with germline inherited cancer risk) and early or complex menopausal symptoms (patients living with HIV, chronic conditions, and cancer).
  • Identify priorities to address unmet environmental and other exposures as it relates to menopausal transition and symptoms in diverse populations of women.
  • Understand current recommendations on menopausal hormone therapy prescribing including when to start and stop, and formulations and durations of use.

The keynote address will be “Menopausal Hormone Therapy: 30 Years of Lessons from the Women’s Health Initiative,” presented by JoAnn Manson, M.D., Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Chief of the Division of Preventive Medicine, Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

On Wednesday, a webinar on efforts to increase women’s access to healthcare in rural areas will be presented by the Bureau of Health Workforce, the Bureau of Primary Health Care and the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy.
